Changing the world can be very easy. Simply purchase products from the Wereldwinkel (World Shop), which has an interesting selection of original presents and delicious food products from other cultures. All our products are made with respect for people and the environment, based on the principles of fair trade. Because producers - such as silversmiths, pottery makers and (coffee) farmers - get a fair price, they can earn a good, honest living. The Wereldwinkel Wassenaar is one of the nearly 400 Worldshops in the Netherlands. The staff and shopassistances - most women - are all volunteers. All the products in these shops are of so called Third World countries origin: Africa, the southern part of Asia and Central and South America. You find a great variety of food products like different kinds of coffee and tea, honey, chocolate and sweets, sugar, red and white wine, juices, rice, marmalades, chutneys, sauces and so on. The non-food products consists of work of art; pottery, wood-carving, recycled glass, jewellery, stone- and paperware, essence and toys of wood. They are authentic, mostly handmade and sometimes even according to age-old traditions. Each item tells its own story. What makes all these products so special? They come from common people in these countries. Small farmers and artisans (craftsmen) often affiliated to a cooperation. They get the possibility to improve their circumstances of work by receiving a part of the payment in advance, by entering into a contract for several years and by help with consultancy and tools. Moreover it is very important that the producers get a fair price for their products. The Wereldwinkel purchases the products from a number of trading-organizations working according to the principles of fair trade. The most important organization is Fair Trade Original. But also smaller importers are buying their products directly from the producers in the Third World. Curious?
